So now that 4.2 is officially out, and the apple tv software update is also out, is there any update on this working?

Engadget's review implies it only works from the YouTube and Videos apps that Apple supplies.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/22/ios-4-2-review-for-ipad/
I don't know if an API is available for other apps to use this. It's really disappointing if not - having to get content into the Videos app before it can be played is a major downside to the updates they put out today.

When using AirVideo on the iPad, 4.2.1, and the AppleTV at 4.1, I can only stream the audio to the Apple TV (just like before the Apple TV Update).
The Videos app works fine, so I'm not sure if its an Apple restriction or not.
Of course my first question was, if I'm streaming HD video to the iPad already, then how much bandwidth would there be left for the iPad to then re-transmit the video?
iTunes can push video directly to the Apple TV, which in a way makes more sense, when the video is already hosted on a desktop/server.
Perhaps the ability for the AirVideo server to stream directly to an AirPlay device, with an added feature of the AirVideo App being able to control the server like a remote? Basically, just like Apple's remote for iTunes/AppleTV but being able to stream more formats then just what iTunes supports. This might be way out of scope for the App as it is now, however. It works perfectly streaming any format video to an iDevice.
Quicktime currently doesn't seem to support AirPlay, you have to play the video's through iTunes.
Almost there...

I can't find any references to AirPlay in the XCode documentation..
Apple web site returns nothing either
Looks like it's a completely closed API.

Yup apple has let us down again. I hate half ass implementations. Although I have a feeling this isn't completely apples fault. Looks like we will Have to wait and hope for a jailbreak solution. I just can't understand why who's ever in charge here to get it. The customer wants something, you deliver It and charge for it, everybody then wins.

steveum wrote:I just wish Air Video had an option that allowed you convert the videos to a format optimal for the new apple tv. Once they are added to itunes, then the apple tv can play them. The whole airplay business is sort irrelevant.
I bought one about a week ago. My experience so far is that the conversions that are targeted for an iphone don't really look great on the apple tv. I think it would really be slick to choose the video(s) you want to watch with the air video app on the iphone, but just indicate that you want the higher quality conversion. For someone like me who has a library of mkv and ts videos, this would make things seem pretty seamless.
The ATV is not meant to be an mkv player as we all know.
In any case, if you want to play your mkv files just use mkvtools on the Mac to switch containers from mkv to mp4. It requires no transcoding and will be a one minute operation. So your h.264 video will be exactly as it was. The iPhone 4 will play the same files as your ATV. You can even use AirPlay to play them.

So.. I thought that during the 4.2 betas, people managed to stream through Air Play all sorts of video/audio apps.
Just got my AppleTV and I'm really frustrated it doesn't stream the airvideo video over airplay to my appleTV.
It just sounds logical it would be supported.

Nice, and it would be nicer if only Apple would allow the change of your app in App store.

While we sit tight and wait for Apple to open up full A/V Airplay to third-party apps, I strongly suggest to take a look to a little gem sprung on Cydia, named AirVideoEnabler
